The Physie Year
An overview of events, classes and terminology
For those who are new to Physie or are simply unsure of the meaning of all the events and competitions that occur throughout the year – the following article has been compiled to offer a brief explanation of our year here at Inner West Physie and Dance. Specific event details become available closer to the date and will be posted on this website.
The syllabus is developed between October and December of the previous year by a group of choreographers for the various ages. Dancers learn choreography from February to November to master the skills and techniques required to be a successful Physie girl as well as achieving along the way improved self esteem and a general physical well-being.
Girls compete at the age they are on 31 August. So if you turn 8 on 31 August you compete as an 8 year old. If you turn 9 on 1 September you still compete as an 8 year old.
FEBRUARY – JULY
During this time we focus on learning and mastering the new syllabus for your specific age group. The syllabus is developed during the holiday period by a group of choreographers from APDA. They are appropriately tailored for different age groups and the choreography is coordinated with a new soundtrack each year.
APRIL – MAY
Music and DVD
The music and teaching DVD for your age group will be distributed by the club.
Competition Leotard
All girls must have a performance leotard to perform.
For individual performances you can wear a coloured leotard. Styles and colours are available from March. You can buy/order one from the shop, or you can order online from the APDA website.
JULY – AUGUST
Interclubs (3 per year)
Interclubs are organised performances between clubs outside your usual area as a friendly preparation to performing the syllabus. Interclubs are a good opportunity to check your progress and be aware of leotard, hair and make-up requirements.
There are no expectations at these events other than the will to perform to the best of your ability and have a lot of fun doing it. Interclubs are always an enjoyable day with rewards for hard work on the day.
All ages from 3 Years to Seniors and Ladies are involved. A nominal entry fee applies to Interclubs to cover medals, hall hire etc. and is set by the host Club. All Interclub competitors must wear a APDA leotard in any colour.
SEPTEMBER
Teams
All junior, senior and ladies teams competitions will be held in September.
This is the main event from the Club's perspective as gradings are achieved through these results each year. A team consists of 8 girls who are judged on their ability to perform the syllabus in perfect timing and standard of work. Members are to work together in a friendly and committed manner. Attending all lessons and practices is essential to ensure a high quality of work and synchronicity.
Inner West physie and dance strives to enable all members to particitpate in team performances but sometimes if class numbers are small then this is not always possible. This performance is held in combined age-groups: 5/6 years; 7/8 years; 9/10 years; 11/12 years etc
Black Leotards are worn so that all members look alike, these are hired through the club.
